Gifted & Talented

Gifted & Talented at Wheat Ridge High School

The Gifted and Talented Center at Wheat Ridge High School is based on the Autonomous Learner Model (ALM). The center works to support students' passion, autonomy, self-advocation and social-emotional well-being.

WRHS offers a full menu of AP and Honors courses. Whether our students are taking a full advanced class load, more typical courses or need support in their day-to-day lives, the center is designed to support students in whatever path they choose. Our students span the spectrum of what a high schooler can be.

Mission

The mission of the Wheat Ridge GT Center is to support the unique emotional, social and intellectual needs of gifted, talented and creative learners by implementing the Autonomous Learner Model; and to provide programming that:

  • Focuses on assisting students' academic needs and challenges.
  • Supports intellectual development.
  • Encourages exploration in areas of interest.
  • Builds upon multipotentiality.
  • Develops enhanced critical- and creative-thinking skills.
  • Provides authentic learning experiences.
  • Fosters a flexible, accepting climate for gifted and talented learners.

Academic rigor combined with individualized programming and mentoring in fields of interest will provide learners with differentiated opportunities to develop their potential and become self-directed, responsible citizens, leading productive, fulfilling lives. GT programming will effectively employ research-based strategies, designed to increase student achievement and nurture autonomous learners.

Application Process

Students who are not currently in a Jeffco GT center must complete an application process prior to completing EnrollJeffco. Testing data may be required if prior data is more than two years old.

Contact Tonia Heffley at Tonia.Heffley@jeffco.k12.co.us to begin the application process or with any questions about applications.

Access our slide presentation for more information about our GT program. Also, check out our WRHS Gifted and Talented Facebook page.

Shadow Days

Shadowing a current GT Center student can be helpful for families considering our program. We will create a personalized schedule for your student that is tailored to the classes they are interested in. Shadow times are available on Mondays or Tuesdays and can be half or full days, or for an individual class.

Fill out the Google Form to submit a shadowing request. Then, please email Elliott Holm at Elliott.Holm@jeffco.k12.co.us for details.

Course Offerings

The WRHS GT Center experience can look different for every student. Our GT center is about flexibility, community, individualization and building autonomous learners. Freshman, sophomore, junior and senior years are distinct from each other.

Each level of the program uses engaging, age-appropriate tasks and projects to foster student development academically, socially and emotionally throughout the high school experience.

Gifted & Talented in Jeffco

The Jeffco Public Schools Gifted and Talented (GT) Department’s vision is to Actualize Learners’ Potential for gifted and high-ability learners through a focus on access, equity, inclusion and diversity. All students deserve an education that provides meaningful growth academically, socially and emotionally.

Each year, every second grader in Jeffco takes The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) which measures reasoning skills with different types of verbal, quantitative and nonverbal questions. The results of this test inform teachers which students may be identified as gifted and talented.

What Is A Gifted Student?

GT students are learners between the ages of four and 21 whose abilities, talents or potential for accomplishment are so exceptional or developmentally advanced that they require special educational programming. Children under five who are gifted may also receive early childhood special educational services.

Gifted students include students from all backgrounds who have exceptional abilities or potential. Gifted students are capable of exceptional performance,  production or learning behavior and have one or more of these areas of giftedness:

Areas of giftedness

  • Intellectual abilities
  • Specific academic skills
  • Creative or productive thinking
  • Leadership abilities
  • Visual arts, performing arts or musical abilities
  • Physical skills

The 2024 Fall GT Center application is now closed.  Please contact your GT Resource Teacher with questions regarding GT Center.
