Attendance

Absences will be considered excused for medical illness, family emergencies, court dates, religious holidays or prearranged school-approved activities only. The school may request a doctor’s note for excessive absences. Refer to the Jeffco Board policy JH-R.

• Students will not be excused from classes to complete assignments or to prepare for other classes, including tests or projects.
• Absence due to sleeping late, no alarm, car problems, traffic, etc. will not be considered an excused absence.

ALL single block absences, tardies, and early releases for appointments will require a provider’s note. Students can drop the note off at the Attendance office or it can be emailed to: Jordan.Stegeman@Jeffco.k12.co.us

OPTION 1 - EARLY RELEASES DURING A CLASS PERIOD

This option is for when a student needs to be released during a class period where they will require a dismissal pass to leave. If the student is leaving during passing periods, lunch, or off blocks please call the attendance line.

Please call the early release line at 303-982-3689 at least 30 minutes prior to the release time in order for us to get your student out in time.

OPTION 2 - ATTENDANCE LINE

This is the option to use for excusing full period absences as well as full day absences and tardies. Parents/ Guardians have 24 hours after the absence has occurred to excuse it via the attendance line.

Call the attendance line at 303-982-7685 and please leave the following information:

• Student’s name (spell the last name)
• Name of parent or guardian making the call
• Date and time frame of the absence (full day, one-half day, single block, tardies)
• Reason for the absence or tardy

OPTION 3 - INFINITE CAMPUS REQUEST TOOL

Families can use Infinite Campus to report same-day or upcoming absences as well as late arrivals with ease. Instructions for using this can be found in the links below.

When a student becomes ill during class, they should tell their teacher, who will send them directly to the health room without the student having to wait for a dismissal pass. The health room aide will note their arrival time and will contact the parent or guardian as to next steps. Please tell your student to go to the clinic first before calling home. There is no need to call the attendance line.

If a student believes they were marked absent in error, the student must contact the teacher to correct it..Then the teacher can notify the attendance office via email or in person to remove the absence. Absences will not be corrected by calling the attendance line.

A student who knows in advance that they will be absent from regularly scheduled classes for more than two days should obtain a pre-arranged absence form—available on this page or in printed form from the attendance office. The completed form, signed by a parent or guardian, must be submitted at least three days before the planned absence.

Pre-Arranged Absence Form

Students under the age of 17 are required by state law to attend school. Administrators will initiate the truancy process and court hearings for those students who have excessive absences. Students 17 years of age and older who have excessive unexcused absences will be encouraged to seek other educational options and may be withdrawn from BCHS based on an attendance-behavior contract.

The following steps will occur in the event of student absences from school:

• The phone system will call home each evening to report absences that have not been excused by 3 p.m. that day.
• Administrative interventions may include parent contact, conferencing, disciplinary action including detention, and initiating truancy processes.
• Detention for tardies/ unexcused absences will be assigned by admin and/or student support staff.
